National Numeracy Day 2022 | National Numeracy Day

A wide-ranging series of video content to celebrate National Numeracy Day.

The joy of numbers

National Numeracy Day is held every year in May to celebrate numbers and build people’s confidence in their numeracy skills.

In 2022, we were lucky to be part of the celebration! We created multiple promo videos, including a dance, rap and baking video with National Numeracy Day’s ambassadors.

Among the featured celebrities were rapper and poet Harry Baker, Bake Off winner Peter Sawkins, and Katya Jones, a Strictly Come Dancing professional. The Chocolate Films team also produced case studies featuring real stories of real people and how numbers affect their everyday lives. Last, but not least, we also streamed the main event live!

The main purpose of these films was to generate awareness and excitement towards the charity and this special day. By putting together a series that harnessed both our promo video and live streaming service offering, we raised valuable awareness through a viral, record-breaking campaign.

A series of outputs

Chocolate Films was commissioned to make a series of films for National Numeracy Day – to build positivity around numbers and improve their accessibility. The primary audience was school children, some of whom aren’t necessarily big fans of maths. The films demonstrate how we use numbers in everything, from baking to dance routines.

We utilised our expertise in creating fun and engaging content to deliver the campaign message. Across all the content, we created a playful, educational tone that would appeal to the film’s target audiences and create a buzz around the NND movement and the 2022 celebration.

The content was ambitious, and it was important that it should be created to make the best use of both the contributors’ time and the charity’s budget. We wanted to help the National Numeracy Day team reach their goal, while keeping costs down.

Shot in multiple locations

With full-time crews in London and Glasgow, we can reach most UK locations in under four hours, helping us save both time and money. Most of the promotional videos were shot in London. The exceptions were the Harry Baker music video (which we shot on a pier in Margate) and the baking video with Peter Sawkins. Peter is based in Edinburgh so we arranged for our Glasgow team to shoot his video, and they even used our Glasgow office for the location. Having a Glasgow-based team and office made it easy to be flexible and cost-effective at the same time.

It was a challenge to organise the varied range of videos, but also a fun experience for our team. It required daily contact with the client to make sure we were on the same page and meeting the overall goal.

Accessible to both children and adults

It was important to the client to make the videos accessible. The target audience is young children which shines through in the tone of voice and style. It’s kept light, fun, and engaging. The rap, baking, and dance videos are great examples of this.

That being said, National Numeracy Day is for people of all ages. Our team also shot videos for an older audience. We made a more informative video with ambassador Mr MoneyJar.

Honest and insightful case studies

The case studies gave us a chance to also offer an insight into how numbers affect people in their everyday lives. In the case studies, we weren’t working with celebrities who have experience being in front of a camera; it was people who hadn’t been in front of a camera before.

We spent time researching to prepare for these and had calls with them to make sure they felt comfortable throughout the whole process. We filmed the case studies virtually. Our filmmaking team comprised of talented creative scriptwriters collaborated with National Numeracy to create engaging virtual lessons on their personal hardships with numbers and maths.

The case studies have a serious tone compared to the other videos. The different range of content made it possible to reach out to different age groups, with an overwhelmingly positive response from viewers.

Rap video went viral

The general feedback from the National Numeracy Day team was positive. Harry Baker’s rap video exceeded their expectations and hit thousands of views on YouTube.

The shoot was a great collaboration between our in-house team, Harry Baker and the rest of the National Numeracy Day team. We worked with a 360 camera with us which gave it a cool ‘tiny planet’ style. We wanted to create an engaging music video with fun visuals that would encourage people to have fun, dance, and sing along.

The video also did well on social media platforms. It managed to reach its target audience and cut through the noise!

Live-stream: Broke Guinness World Record

National Numeracy Day was celebrated on the 18th of May 2022. Not only did we produce promo videos; we also live-streamed the actual event! Kathy Jones and Bobby Seagull hosted the live stream event and seven of our filmmakers were involved to make sure everything was going as planned.

Our crew filmed schoolchildren dancing at King Solomon Academy, which broke a Guinness World Record for the most viewers of a rolling numbers live stream. Nothing less than 5,494 devices were logged on to watch the live stream on YouTube. Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi and Skills Minister Alex Burghart were also at the event and congratulated everyone on their big achievement.

Experts in educational content

National Numeracy Day is one of many charities we’ve worked with within the education sector. We’ve previously produced content for higher education such as universities as well as primary and secondary schools. We have also made different types of training videos for other sectors such as healthcare and corporate businesses.

In addition to our experience, we have a deep passion for education. Our team of filmmakers is DBS-checked and experienced in working with students and teachers.

Chocolate films made a film for our small charity and the quality of the product was excellent. They really managed to capture the essence of what we do and that is so valuable to us in recruiting new members and attracting funding. Very easy feedback and amendment process too. Would recommend

Chocolate Films workshops are absolutely amazing for my child! The team is so friendly and does a great job of keeping the kids engaged. My child loves learning about filmmaking and always comes home excited to share all the cool things they’ve done that day.The workshops are really hands-on and encourage so much creativity, which is fantastic to see. My child feels so proud of what they’re creating, and the films they work on always turn out brilliant. If you’re looking for a fun and creative activity for your kids, I can’t recommend their workshops enough.

Any artist or creative who has not wrapped their head around creating unique visual imagery needs to invest some time, effort and energy on this powerful medium which is now taking priority over a business card or website. Even a short workshop like those on offer at Chocolate Films will set you off in the right direction.

I work at Cystic Fibrosis Trust and we are delighted with the animation Chocolate Films created for us. It met the brief and has helped us to explain our activities to current and future partners. Chocolate Films were a pleasure to work with and we appreciated their flexibility in working to a very tight timescale.

We commissioned Chocolate films to complete a BTS film as a promotional film for our Level 4 foundation course. We were out on location with our own 3 short films with our most senior students, and we needed an extra crew to capture all that was happening on set. They were thoughtful, efficient and proactive. Capturing some great interviews and BTS (thanks Elton!), weaving it into a great promotional film for us. Lucia steered the project beautifully from start to finish (thanks Nikita too). We’ve worked with Chocolate films before and would happily do so in the future. Chloe – London Screen Academy

I filmed a green screen production using sound and it came out great. Lucia and Nikka are lovely and happy to help, the facilities are exactly what I needed (there’s also a make-up room) and it was easy to get to.

Chocolate films produced a fun promotional video for us as part of our 80th anniversary. They were professional with clear communication, and the project was delivered to time.
